The tasks you're given in career mode are a great way to get used to flying, while multiplayer challenges will really test you. Multiplayer mode suffers from a lack of players at the moment, but is otherwise easy to use, and even setting up your own server is a breeze.

The graphics overall are acceptable for a simulator, and the in-game sound is fine. Weather effects look good too, but Take On Helicopters does lose points for the voice acting in the game, which is distractingly poor.

If you're looking for a fun and in depth simulator, Take On Helicopters is a great choice. However, this isn't accessible enough to convert more casual players.

Baku's developers claim the program uniquely works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. Note that this function does NOT change the contents of the registry in any way, nor does it physically defrag the registry files on the drive.

Be warned though that it takes a little longer than programs such as CCleaner and you'll have to wait more than few minutes for the registry backup to be made.

And of course, there's a built-in spell checker to make sure that your mails are professionally crafted.

Nowadays, this is a little outdated because many people use a separate application - or even Firefox itself - to follow RSS feeds but it may be useful if you only want to mail and follow RSS feeds at the same time when composing mails.

Searching your mail

The search tool in Thunderbird is excellent and searches happen in real time as you type. Search results are displayed in a separate tab. Tabs in general are a very big part of Thunderbird and like Firefox, you can have multiple messages open in separate tabs. This is a fantastic feature of Thunderbird although does tempt you to have too many mails open at once. Archiving is also another handy feature for those that don't want to delete messages but want to clear space in their inbox.

So what about security? You might think an open-source mail client would inherently be less secure than a paid one but Thunderbird is surprisingly secure with a fairly bulletproof spam filter. The reason being is that Thunderbird is regularly updated and crafted by volunteers who's main interest is making a better product rather than profiting from an end-product. Security updates are regular but small so as not to slow-down Thunderbird.

Exchange support

One of the biggest selling points of Mozilla Thunderbird is that it offers Microsoft Exchange support, meaning it will appeal to Office users who previously discounted it.

On the downside, the app is lacking some finesse in certain areas. Thunderbird still doesn't have conversation style email views like in Gmail (although an extension to do this can be downloaded separately) and there aren't many options for managing attachments and photos. There's also no calendar but again, this can be downloaded separately in the form of "Lightning".

Overall, Thunderbird is an excellent free alternative to Microsoft Outlook.

Ma nella maggior parte dei casi si tratta di riedizioni pessime; Super Mario 3: Mario Foreverè invece una delle migliori in circolazione, evidentemente realizzata da un vero fan.

Il gameplay di Super Mario 3: Mario Forever è estremamente fedele all'originale, e un qualsiasi fan del gioco non avrà problemi di sorta a prenderlo in mano. Allo stesso tempo, però, il titolo ti sorprenderà per le innovazioni che apporta al classico Mario Bros.

In Super Mario 3: Mario Forever la grafica è stata nettamente migliorata, i livelli sono 50 e, nonostante molte somiglianze, sono tutti diversi dall'originale. Inoltre, sono presenti molti quadri bonus (come The lost Map e Hardcore World), tra cui anche uno segreto, e alla fine di ogni mondo e alla fine di ogni mondo dovrai affrontare il terribile Broswer.

L'unica nota negativa riguarda la risposta dei comandi che non è sempre perfetta, ma comunque decisamente superiore alla media dei remake. In Super Mario 3: Mario Forever è possibile salvare ma solo alla fine di ogni mondo, il che può a volte essere frustrante.

Insomma, nonostante i suoi 30 anni di vita, l'idraulico più famoso di sempre è ancora perfettamente in forma, pronto a saltellare sul tuo desktop e a riscattare la principessa.

Tecnicamente Xmarks è un addon crossbrowser e crossplatform che sincronizza bookmark e password su un server remoto. In parole molto più semplici, Xmarks conserva i tuoi preferiti e le tue password e ti permette di accedervi da qualunque computer. Una volta installato, il programma ti chiederà di creare un profilo (la registrazione è rapida) per registrarti al servizio. Con la tua username e la password sei pronto a sparpagliare i tuoi preferiti tra tutti i computer che vuoi.

Dopo l?installazione troverai un pulsante blu sulla barra degli indirizzi: clicca e vedrai le informazioni sul sito che stai visitando e i suggerimenti ad altri siti simili. Se guardi in basso, sulla barra di stato, c?è un altro piccolo pulsante blu: da lì puoi accedere alle impostazioni di Xmarks, avviare le sincronizzazioni e impostare le preferenze.

L'interfaccia di Windows 7 Manager, ti avviso, è poco invitante e ti ci vorrà un po' prima di raccapezzarti tra le diverse aree: Information, Optimizer, Cleaner, Customization, Security, Network e Miscellaneous Utilities. In pratica puoi fare un po' di tutto: deframmentare, gestire i processi e i servizi, eliminare archivi superflui, disinstallare applicazioni, avere informazioni sull'hardware e sulla velocità del sistema, ritoccare la grafica e tanto altro ancora.

Se temi di fare danni, no problem: Windows 7 Manager ti offre la possibilità di creare un punto di ripristino prima di iniziare a smanettare. Nonostante sia organizzato per tab, il programma è comunque ancora abbastanza caotico e a volte l'informazione mostrata è poco leggibile. Per il resto è un ottimo programma, speriamo quindi in un'interfaccia più chiara nelle prossime release!

Le altre novità sono tutte sotto la scocca: protezione automatica dai virus (Microsoft Security Essentials può decidere automaticamente se eliminare il malware), miglior rendimento, nuovo engine (più reattivo ed efficace) e compatibilità con tutti i principali sistemi Windows: XP, Vista, 7 e anche il futuro Windows 8. Il software si conferma ancora una volta un prodotto valido e adatto specialmente agli utenti inesperti.

Stando alle ultime voci di corridoio, MSE potrebbe essere incluso di default in Windows 8, il prossimo sistema operativo di Microsoft. Microsoft Security Essentials 4 è ancora in beta e instabile, pertanto va usato solo per motivi di test su sistemi secondari o macchine virtuali.

Meno male che il funzionamento di BurnAware non è direttamente proporzionale alla correttezza della sua traduzione in italiano. Se gli strafalcioni ortografici non ti danno fastidio, BurnAware si rivela un ottimo programma di masterizzazione gratuito.

BurnAware Free è l'ideale per chi deve semplicemente salvare dei file su CD, copiare un DVD al volo o creare la propria personale compilation musicale: in tutti questi casi non hai bisogno di acquistare Nero né nessun'altra costosa suite di masterizzazione. BurnAware offre tutti gli strumenti di cui hai bisogno per registrare facilmente CD, DVD e persino Blu-ray Disc.

In un'interfaccia pulita in stile wizard, BurnAware ti chiede "Che volete fare?". In realtà, l'ambigua formalità rivela una poco precisa traduzione dell'interfaccia. Peccato, perché il programma funziona, e bene. Basta un click per scegliere l'opzione che più fa al caso tuo: se non capisci a cosa serve una determinata funzione, ad esempio Jukebox CD (creare compilation MP3 o WAV), basta passarci sopra con il mouse per ottenere una spiegazione abbastanza precisa nella parte inferiore dell'interfaccia.

Puoi aggiungere i file selezionando il pulsante "Aggiungi" di BurnAware o semplicemente trascinarli sul pannello e masterizzare cliccando sul pulsante rosso. BurnAware supporta la masterizzazione multisessione, la simulazione e la verifica di scrittura e ti permette di cancellare un supporto riscrivibile.

Quello che manca sono le opzioni di configurazione avanzata o le utility per creare copertine ed etichette, presenti invece nella versione a pagamento del programma. Tuttavia, se hai bisogno di queste funzioni esiste un software gratuito che le offre: è l'ottimo CDBurnerXP Pro. Sempre un gradino più su di BurnAware.

Quando ero ragazzino passavo molte serate a registrare le mie canzoni favorite dalla radio. Erano i tempi dei mangianastri e delle musicassette. Se mi avessero parlato di Internet, di file MP3 e di programmi come phonostar-Player avrei pensato a un racconto di fantascienza. Oggi la radio non si ascolta quasi più dagli apparecchi radio tradizionali, e le canzoni non si registrano su musicassetta (e tra poco nemmeno su CD).

Con phonostar-Player puoi sentire più di 4000 radio in streaming da tutto il mondo, comprese quelle italiane. La prima cosa da fare è utilizzare il motore di ricerca, impostando parametri come il paese dell'emittente, la lingua o il genere di musica. Puoi facilmente aggiungere quelle che più ti piacciono alla lista delle tue radio preferite, per ascoltarle velocemente ogni volta che vorrai.

Le radio su Internet emettono in streaming, perciò normalmente non è possibile scaricare ciò che trasmettono. Ma phonostar-Player aggira questo ostacolo permettendoti di registrare tramite la tua scheda audio quello che ascolti. Come facevo io con il mio vecchio registratore, basta premere il tasto "REC". Il segnale audio verrà registrato sul disco rigido in formato WAV o MP3.

L'interfaccia è piacevole e facile da usare, ma non sempre si riesce a trovare la funzione che cerchi velocemente. È molto riuscito invece il motore di ricerca e sicuramente ti divertirai a trovare nuove radio da ogni angolo del pianeta. Le radio che ti offre phonostar-Player trasmettono nel modo "classico", con una programmazione che non puoi personalizzare a tuo piacimento. Se cerchi invece radio di nuova generazione, dove sei tu a impostare o controllare la musica che vuoi ascoltare, allora ti consiglio Last.fm.

Il programma si installa in un attimo e, grazie al menu Manage, possiamo subito inserire le regole che vogliamo vengano applicate ai file che trasciniamo in DropIt. Se, ad esempio, desideriamo avere tutta la nostra musica riunita insieme, possiamo creare una regola che sposti in una specifica cartella tutti i file in formato MP3, WAV e AIFF.

L?operazione funziona anche con intere directory. Se per esempio vuoi fare pulizia nella cartella di download (di solito una delle più caotiche del PC), puoi creare delle regole che smistino tutti i file DOC nella cartella Documenti, tutti i filmati AVI nella cartella Video e tutti gli EXE nella cartella Installers. Poi, un drag and drop e il gioco è fatto.

Rispetto ad altri programmi con funzioni simili, come Belvedere, DropIt offre qualche opzione in meno (non rinomina i file e non li può riordinare in base alla dimensione, ad esempio), ma è stabile, leggero e molto semplice.

Da segnalare sono anche la possibilità di attivare le funzioni di DropIt con il tasto destro del mouse e l?opzione che consente di creare tanti profili con regole diverse. Nel complesso, quindi, un?applicazione quasi magica: è buona, crea dipendenza ma non fa male.

"Divide et impera" sembra essere la filosofia alla base di TweetDeck. Si tratta di un client Twitter per desktop, basato su Adobe Air, che punta a rendere più gestibili i post sul noto servizio di microblogging. Non solo i propri. Dall'interfaccia di TweetDeck puoi facilmente seguire anche i twitter dei tuoi contatti e non solo.

TweetDeck divide i messaggi in più colonne separate. Le tre colonne principali contengono tutti i post della tua timeline, le risposte indirizzate a te e i messaggi diretti. Puoi creare altre colonne, ad esempio formando dei gruppi di utenti. È persino possibile creare una colonna dedicata ad una specifica ricerca. Ad esempio puoi impostare come termine di ricerca Softonic e ricevere tutti i messaggi sulla rete Twitter che includono la parola Softonic.

Naturalmente, direttamente dall'interfaccia di TweetDeck puoi aggiornare direttamente il tuo account, con tutte le opzioni del caso, come l'accorciamento di URL. L'interfaccia del programma è elegante e chiara. Le uniche pecche sono una generale lentezza e le limitate opzioni di personalizzazione. Ad esempio, non sarebbe male poter restringere manualmente le dimensioni di una colonna.

HashOnClick calcola e compara il valore di hash di un file per verificarne l'integrità. Usa diversi algoritmi e si integra con il menu contestuale di Windows

Il valore di hash o checksum è una stringa di caratteri univoca ottenuta da un file. Il che significa che tutte le volte che si calcola questo valore, il risultato è sempre lo stesso se il file non ha subito modifiche. Volendo, lo si può considerare un'impronta digitale. Cosa tu possa fare con l'impronta digitale di un file è presto detto: puoi controllarne l'integrità da modifiche accidentali, dovute a errori durante trasferimenti, compressioni o altro ancora.

HashOnClick si occupa proprio di questo. Una volta installato aggiunge una voce al menu contestuale del mouse, che permette di selezionare uno dei tre algoritmi disponibili (MD5, SHA1 e CRC32) per calcolare il checksum. Il valore ottenuto può quindi essere salvato in un file di testo e copiato nella clipboard. Quest'ultima opzione permette ad HashOnClick di fare un confronto diretto tra il valore in memoria e quello calcolato su un nuovo file. Il tutto è molto basilare, anche troppo. Un'interfaccia un po' più elaborata avrebbe consentito un confronto tra valori di hash più immediato.

A chi è preoccupato per la sicurezza dei propri documenti, PixelCryptor offre una tecnologia di protezione sicura e originale. Il programma crea dei pacchetti criptati apribili solo con il file immagine usato durante la fase di creazione.

Il procedimento di utilizzo di PixelCryptor è semplicissimo: si selezionano i file che si vogliono proteggere e si sceglie un'immagine (in formato JPG, GIFF, PNG, TIFF o BMP). A questo punto il programma crea un archivio protetto, che sarà sbloccato solo accedendo nuovamente a PixelCryptor e selezionando la stessa immagine. Chiaramente è meglio evitare che l'archivio protetto e l'immagine siano conservate nella stessa cartella (o PC); è consigliabile organizzarsi mantenendo i file completamente separati.

Utilizzando i dati di un file grafico in combinazione con gli algoritmi DES e AES, il programma riesce a criptare i dati in maniera sicura. Le combinazioni sono praticamente infinite e non esistono sistemi per rimuovere la protezione se non utilizzando la stessa, identica immagine.

C'è qualcuno qui in redazione che adora Opera. Non passa giorno senza che ne decanti le lodi. Siccome il collega sa essere convincente, stavo quasi per abbandonare il buon vecchio Firefox. Ad attirarmi moltissimo tra l'altro era una particolare funzione, chiamata "Speed Dial" che ti permette di visualizzare subito, all'apertura del browser, tutti i tuoi siti preferiti in una comoda galleria di anteprime.

Fortuna per Firefox che con le estensioni può diventare praticamente quello che vuoi. Se quello che desideri è un clone di Opera con la solidità di Firefox, basta scaricare i plugin giusti. In questo caso il plugin è (guardacaso) Speed Dial. E io l'ho installato e adottato con (quasi) piena soddisfazione.

Speed Dial fa esattamente quello che immagini. Apre nel browser una galleria di thumbnail dei tuoi siti preferiti, pronti da cliccare. Ricchissimo di opzioni, ti permette di decidere se caricarle solo all'avvio del browser o anche all'apertura di una nuova finestra o una nuova scheda. Puoi impostare delle combinazioni di tasti per richiamare Speed Dial oppure installare un pulsante nella barra degli strumenti. Le anteprime sono completamente personalizzabili, puoi anche identificare un sito con un'immagine salvata sul tuo PC.

Il vantaggio di Speed Dial è evidente: riconosci a occhio il sito che vuoi aprire e puoi anche abbandonare l'uso dei segnalibri, visto che i collegamenti possono essere raggruppati e organizzati come più ti piace. Perfetto. Purtroppo non è più in italiano.

Tra gli effetti disponibili WavePad offre amplificazione, normalizzazione, riverbero, eco, riduzione del rumore e altro ancora. WavePad può anche essere usato come convertitore di formato e "ripper" di CD per estrarre le tracce. Sviluppare un gioco non è facile. Sviluppare un gioco in 3D è un'impresa ancora più grande. Tempo e conoscenze tecniche avanzate sono solo due dei requisiti. Platinum Arts Sandbox è un'interessante progetto per venire incontro a tutti i game designer potenziali che sono carenti delle summenzionate risorse.

Si tratta di un ambiente di sviluppo un po' particolare, perché permette di modificare il proprio progetto direttamente dal suo interno. All'avvio di Platinum Arts Sandbox bisogna caricare uno degli scenari predefinti, all'interno del quale ci si muove come in un qualsiasi sparatutto in prima persona. Premendo il tasto E, però, si attiva la modalità Editing che permette di spostarsi liberamente, aggiungere oggetti, effetti di luce e altro ancora.

Platinum Arts Sandbox offre in definitiva un buon motore 3D con cui sperimentare, creare mappe e altro ancora. Chi vuole provare a creare un videogioco vero e proprio, deve però fare i conti con opzioni più avanzate come un linguaggio di scripting. Da questo punto di vista, è fondamentale la documentazione per Platinum Arts Sandbox che si trova in abbondanza sul wiki ufficiale.

Realizzata da Tiscali, indoona è l'unica applicazione di video-conferenza 100% italiana. Un progetto ambizioso e con buone possibilità di riuscita. In fase di lancio, ti permette di chiamare gratis anche tutti i numeri fissi

Sostituirsi a Skype nei cuori e nei PC di milioni di utenti non è impresa facile. Ma è proprio questo l'obiettivo di indoona, software per chiamare e videochiamare gratis nato in Italia. Il progetto è di Tiscali e sembra promettere bene. Puoi scaricare indoona anche sul tuo smartphone (Android e iPhone) e chiamare e videochiamare in mobilità.

Installare indoona è semplice e veloce: all'avvio del programma ti verrà chiesto di registrarti (basta la mail e il tuo numero di cellulare) e sei pronto ad iniziare. Ora potrai videochiamare gratuitamente tutti i tuoi contatti e, fino alla fine dell'anno, potrai inoltre chiamare tutti i telefoni di rete fissa in Italia (fino a un massimo di 200 minuti al mese). Le chiamate verso i numeri fissi di Tiscali saranno gratuite sempre.

Abbiamo provato una chiamata (gratuita) verso un numero fisso italiano e la qualità è stata molto buona. Anche la comunicazione tra PC e PC è stata fluida, nonostante qualche occasionale ritardo nella risposta. Anche le chiamate verso smartphone che abbiano installato indoona sono di buona qualità. Più in generale, indoona soffre ancora di qualche instabilità ma niente di troppo grave, considerato anche che è un prodotto ancora in fase di sviluppo.

Per quanto riguarda la user experience, l'interfaccia di indoona è ancora un po' scarna e potrai sentire la mancanza di una guida introduttiva o di pulsanti più auto-esplicativi, ma ci sono funzioni interessanti che non trovi in altri software simili, come la possibilità di registrare le conversazioni e salvarle come MP3 e altri formati audio. La chat funziona bene e le emoticon presenti di default sono molto carine anche se poco numerose.

Insomma, magari non potrà soppiantare lo strapotere di Skype, almeno nell'immediato, ma indoona è un progetto interessante. Da tenere d'occhio.

doubleTwist devrait être la solution. Les développeurs veulent en faire le le logiciel central pour tous vos fichiers, tous vos périphériques: un téléphone portable, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, un iPod, un iPhone, un Zune, peu importe.

L'idée est que vous puissiez y connecter n'importe quoi et y mettre n'importe quel fichier, doubleTwist se chargeant de convertir ce dernier dans tous les formats nécessaires et de mettre à jour votre terminal quand il se connecte.

L'interface rappelle iTunes avec un accès à la bibliothèque de fichiers multimédia (son, image et vidéo).

Finis les MP3 d'iTunes qui ne peuvent être lus par Windows Media Player, ou inversement.

Hélas, le logiciel est encore en version beta et il n'est pas encore 100% au point. Très peu de terminaux sont reconnus, le glisser-déposer de fichiers n'est pas au point, etc.

Prometteur mais encore très jeune, voici un nouveau venu dans la course des gestionnaires de musique à suivre de près.
