Où est hubiC?

hubiC s'installe sur le PC sous la forme d'un nouveau disque dur, accessible depuis le menu de l'ordinateur. Une classique barre de progression Windows indique l'état de son remplissage. Cliquer dessus permet de faire apparaître l'architecture composée de 3 dossiers pré-paramétrés: Documents, Images, Videos. Libre à chacun d'ajouter les siens.

hubiC reste disponible dans le Systray. L'interface affiche le compte actuellement connecté, l'état des ressources utilisées. A titre d'exemple, il nous a fallu 1min40 pour synchroniser 100Mo de vidéo, soit 1 Mo/s, ce qui se révèle très correct. Tout dépend aussi, bien sûr de la qualité de votre connexion internet.

Si 25 Go ne suffisent pas, vous pouvez craquer pour l'une des 2 formules actuellement proposées, à des tarifs intéressants.

hubiC sur mobile

Un seul défaut vient ternir le joli tableau de Weather Clock: lorsque vous ouvrez le menu contextuel depuis la zone de notification système, il est impossible de toucher une autre application, ou même de sortir de ce menu. Vous devez absolument cliquer quelque part dessus. Un peu envahissant.

Weather Clock est une application très intéressante qui ajoute des fonctionnalités pratiques à l'horloge de Windows.

Miner Wars is an in-development 3D single and multiplayer space game. The game combines mining and tunneling with space combat.

Miner Wars looks good, with detailed graphics that are convincing from a distance and up close. Like Minecraft, Miner Wars is currently quite aimless - you can do what you want, but for no particular reason! Some people might find this demotivating, but simply exploring, mining and chasing other ships can be fun for quite some time.

Miner Wars is a long way from complete, but is looking very promising. With an extensive singe and cooperative multiplayer mode, plus a Massively Multiplayer Online mode promised, it could prove hugely successful.

TagScanner is a powerful tag editor with batch functions and special features that allows you to export playlists to HTML or Excel worksheets. What's most useful about TagScanner though is the fact that it can edit huge numbers of tags at the same time and not just that, but it can import tag information from Amazon or Freedb.

The information retrieved by TagScanner can sometimes be hit or miss in accuracy but it saves a hell of a lot of time. You can generate tag information from file and folder names and it can edit a wide range of music formats including MP3, OGG, Musepack, Monkey's Audio, FLAC, AAC, OptimFROG, SPEEX, WavePack, TrueAudio, WMA, MP4 files.

In terms of tagging, TagScanner is also pretty impressive supporting ID3 1.0/1.1/2.2/2.3/2.4 tags, APE v1 and v2 tags, Vorbis Comments, WMA tags and MP4(iTunes) metadata. The player function in TagScanner is basic but it does allow you to create playlists and export them for reference which is useful for showing others your collection.

TagScanner is a very powerful tag editor that will surely save you time although you may find that automatically retrieved tags are not 100% accurate.

There are multiple ways to use Twitter, and if you usually use the Firefox browser, Power Twitter is an add-on that adds some interesting features.

Once installed, the Twitter home page will essentially load twice. This adds a fraction of time, but it's not prohibitive. Immediately, there are three buttons above the "what are you doing?" box - post photo, shorten link and today's question. The first two are really useful, and you can choose which photo site to utilize. The shorten link gives you a few extra characters to tweet with.

Today's Question is a silly option, but if you're really desperate for something to tweet, you can always use that to answer. Much better is that all the shortened links in your Twitter feed are expanded so you can see exactly what they contain. It also adds a re-tweet RT tab to each tweet, which is currently missing from the normal Twitter page.

While all this is useful, it comes at a price, which is an advert added to the sidebar. It's not too intrusive, but noticeable. Over all, while the functions are useful they do make the minimal Twitter design a bit more cluttered. If you're not too bothered about that, you may find it a really useful tool.

Power Twitter really does make the Twitter home page more useful!

Veetle is a project of Stanford University that brings you hundreds of TV channels to your browser - no external application is required.

The good news is that many of these channels are useful (especially for sports fans) and the streaming quality is stable and high quality. The media player looks slick and refined and it loads incredibly quickly. You can watch CNN, Fox News and other custom made channels by users such as News 24/7 and lots of Japanese cartoon channels.

You can view channels by most viewed, most discussed and top rated and all of these inevitably mean sports channels - either football or golf. You can view any channel in full screen mode simply by double clicking on the screen or using the expander button at the base of the screen. Unfortunately, you can't chat with other users viewing the channels although there is a lively forum.

Veetle is an excellent innovation that brings quality TV viewing directly to your browser. It could do with a more organized way of listing channels and schedules but it's a very good start.

EarthDesk features three map views (Political, Natural Color and Living Earth Satellite), 11 projections, and 10,000 cities. You have many options that cover how the Earth is projected onto your desktop, the centering of the map, and how you want it to refresh. Note that EarthDesk does not install itself as a standalone application - it simply loads as a preference pane, from where you can administer it.

When you install the EarthDesk in your preference pane, you're presented with the configuration options. The first thing you need to do is choose a city to center it on in the Locations tab (your hometown location in other words). There are 10,000 to go through but fortunately you can search for them using the search box.

The Display tab is the most interesting as regards setup. In here, you can configure what kind of view you want to use, how far you want to zoom into the Earth and how close you want to see the clouds. Note that you can access the preferences at any time from the menu bar, where you'll see the EarthDesk icon although you'll have to activate this option in the actual preferences itself.

You'll have to experiment for quite a while to find the view that you like. One thing I definitely recommend however is zooming into the planet because it's a bit more interesting than seeing the globe as a whole (at least during the day anyway). The cloud formations you see are the actual clouds in the sky at any given moment and their movements update according to the time schedule you've specified.

All things considered, this isn't particularly interesting. There's a saying 'About as interesting as watching paint dry' - and 'watching clouds move' could be used in the way. I imagine that EarthDesk is more interesting at night when darkness falls and you start to cities light up. I also experienced problems stopping and starting Earth Desk - the second time I tried to start it, it simply wouldn't.

EarthDesk is an interesting desktop background for geographers, those keen on keeping an eye on weather movements in real time, or simply those that want a slightly more original desktop background.

Firefox is of course Mozilla's big success story but the Mozilla Foundation do a lot more than web browsers. The unusually named SeaMonkey is a Mozilla product which has lofty ambitions - to be a web browser, advanced email, newsgroup and feed client, IRC chat, and HTML editor in one.

If this sounds a bit much to pull of well you'd be right. SeaMonkey is a bit of an outdated concept nowadays and it's no surprise that it carried on the work that Netscape started many years ago. It's a lot to get right in one go but this latest release sees SeaMonkey finally brought up to date for the demands of internet users today. And you know from the start it can't be that bad - under the hood, SeaMonkey is based on the same Mozilla source code which powers such things as Firefox, Thunderbird, Camino, Sunbird and Miro.

The similarities of SeaMonkey with Firefox are obvious from the start and with good reason. SeaMonkey 2.0 has been refurbished with a modern version of Firefox based on Firefox 3.5.4 and is now much closer to Firefox as far as user profiles, add-ons, and functionality of user interface elements are concerned. Tabs in SeaMonkey can now be reopened after they have been closed and the way passwords and usernames are handled has been overhauled. To select another part of the suite you want to use, just go to the 'Window' option in the Menu Bar and select either Browser, Mail and Newsgroups, Address Book, IRC Chat and Composer.

There are several other major improvements in SeaMonkey related to the mail client. Setting up an account is easy and retrieving e-mail using the IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) protocol is now faster and mail is synchronized by default by your computer. And at long last, email accounts, folders, and messages can be viewed in tabs.

On the downside, in terms of looks, SeaMonkey hasn't changed an awful lot despite the release of Windows 7. The IRC chat client still looks very basic, techy and intimidating too. Also, some people feel that the new SeaMonkey has moved too far away from it's original Netscape origins in look, functionality and feel. Finally, there seems there is no basic import function to import passwords from earlier versions of Seamonkey or even Firefox, which is a bit annoying.

SeaMonkey will still probably still only appeal to those that have used it from version 1.0 but there's no doubt that this latest release makes it a much more competitive web suite.

In pratica Facebook Rounder rende tondeggiante tutto il tondeggiabile. Arrotonda i contorni delle foto, del box dove inserire i tuoi status, dei messaggi... di tutto, via. I cambiamenti sono sottili ma l'effetto cumulativo è davvero buono e l'interfaccia di Facebook migliora sensibilmente.

Non ci sono opzioni di configurazione né altri ammennicoli, e questo un po' dispiace, ma Facebook Rounder è una di quelle piccole applicazioni a cui ti affezioni subito!

VirtualBox Portable configurerà automaticamente il sistema virtuale con le impostazioni della macchina reale.

VirtualBox Portable permette di condividere cartelle tra i sistemi host e guest, creare "snapshot" (punti di ripristino), per recuperare il sistema virtuale in caso di problemi, e molto altro ancora.

VirtualBox Portable consuma meno memoria RAM rispetto a programmi come VMware, ma paga l'importante assenza del drag and drop per trascinare i file dalla finestra guest al sistema host e viceversa. Nonostante questo, il prodotto è una delle migliori soluzioni attualmente disponibili nell'ambito della virtualizzazione.

L'interfaccia di Windows 7 Manager, ti avviso, è poco invitante e ti ci vorrà un po' prima di raccapezzarti tra le diverse aree: Information, Optimizer, Cleaner, Customization, Security, Network e Miscellaneous Utilities. In pratica puoi fare un po' di tutto: deframmentare, gestire i processi e i servizi, eliminare archivi superflui, disinstallare applicazioni, avere informazioni sull'hardware e sulla velocità del sistema, ritoccare la grafica e tanto altro ancora.

Se temi di fare danni, no problem: Windows 7 Manager ti offre la possibilità di creare un punto di ripristino prima di iniziare a smanettare. Nonostante sia organizzato per tab, il programma è comunque ancora abbastanza caotico e a volte l'informazione mostrata è poco leggibile. Per il resto è un ottimo programma, speriamo quindi in un'interfaccia più chiara nelle prossime release!
